Senior Project and ESLRs- Blog 19

Senior Project and ESLRs
1) Effective learner
2) I believe I have excelled in this because, I have been creative in the way I approach senior project.  I consistently try to think outside the box to perform some of the components.
3) I have begun the Foster Care Club, which is one way of approaching my topic, in which had never occurred to me before I had to think of something to do for mentorship.

Blog 18: 2 hr meeting answer #3

Blog 18: 2hr. Meeting Answer #3
1) How best can foster care services help a foster care child graduate from highschool?
2) My third answer to my essential question is to have a life mentor program for the system.
3a) According to an interview, with the director of trinity youth services, foster children need someone in their life they can always rely on to stick around, someone to support them.
3b) Children are 52 % less likely to drop out of school, 46% less likely to use drugs, 52% less likely to have violent behavior.
3c)Life mentors reduce teen pregnancy by 35%.
4) "Mentor A Young Person and Change 2 Lives Forever: Yours and Theirs | The Caring Effect." The Caring Effect | Awareness + Caring + Action = Hope. N.p., n.d. Web. 28 Feb. 2013. <http://www.thecaringeffect.org/blog%20post/mentor-a-young-person-and-change-2-lives-forever-yours-and-theirs/>.
5) I plan on looking for more evidence to support my answer.

Blog 16: 2-Hour Meeting Answer #2

 2-Hour Meeting Answer #2
1) How best can foster care services help a foster care child graduate from highschool?
2) One of the best ways that foster care services can help a foster care child graduate from highschool, would be to make it mandatory for the children to get at least two hours of tutoring a week from tutors in the system.
3a) My mentor Vanessa Vizzard told me that as of right now in the system social workers are not required to make sure the foster care children are doing good in school academically.
3b) In the article, UNDERSTANDING FOSTER YOUTH EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES, it states that children do not take advantage of the resources they are given, such as tutoring. It explains that only 10% of foster children are using their educational resources ages 0-5.
3c) In this same article it shows that the amount of foster youth that graduate from highschool raises from 49%, without early use of services such as tutoring, to 71% that do take advantage of these services.
4)"UNDERSTANDING FOSTER YOUTH EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES." www.co-invest.org. California Child Welfare Co-investment Partnership, 14 Oct. 2013. Web. 14 Oct. 2013. <www.co-invest.org/resources/347252_CFPIC_Insights.pdf>.

Mentor: Vanessa Vizzard
5) I plan to continue my study of answer 2 by doing more research to back up the amount of time the child should go tutoring each week.

Blog#2: Topic Choice

Foster Care
a. My topic is Foster Care, I chose this because, I hope to one day become a social worker or something connected to this field.  My passion in life is to make a positive difference in the world.  The best way to do that, that I can think of, is to help children.  Because kids are our future, and when my generation is gone, I want the next one to love being apart of life.  I believe that in order to help the children in this world succeed in life, we need to start by giving them a supportive and safe environment to grow up in.  This is where foster care for abused and neglected younglings come in. :)

b.
  • I-poly Citizen: I plan to practice and use my "I-ploy" public speaking skills, with people I have to talk to and explain to, the foster care facts and needs.  These skills will be used in trying to make people aware that they can make a difference in a child's life, no matter how small the donation; whether it be school supplies, a home, or just their appreciated time. As I get out their and talk to a number of strangers, I will be strengthening my presenting techniques, to become a better I-poly citizen.
  • Effective Communicator: I plan to relay information about the issue at hand, foster care,  to others.  This will make me more effective as a communicator because, it takes practice to get the message across random persons minds.
  • Effective Learner: I plan to take in as much information about my topic as possible, so that I speak truthful statements about foster care.  Researching, reading, and taking notes on foster care, will advance my research skills all the better.  This knowledge will be used to help me become a more effective learner.
  • Effective User of Technology: Well besides becoming a more effective user of technology just by doing these blogs, I also plan to; learn how to photo shop and create fliers on the computer. This will be used to catch peoples attention in my mentorship hours.  Learning how to do these things will expand my wisdom of technology, and will make me a more effective user of technology. :)
